L'ORÉAL SUPPORTS THE GLOBAL COMPACT
L’Oréal joined last June the Global Compact, an international sustainable development initiative launched by United Nations’ Secretary-General Kofi Annan in 2000. This decision is part of the economic and human ambitions as well as the respect for the environment that have structured the Group’s sustainable development over the years.
The Challenge
This initiative challenges businesses to support nine principles in the areas of human rights, labor and the environment in partnership with UN agencies, labor and civil society. The Global Compact was launched three years ago and today, more than 1 200 companies worldwide, international labor and civil society organizations have joined.
The Global Compact is a voluntary corporate citizenship initiative that encourages business to become part of the solution to the challenges of globalization. In this way, the private sector – in partnership with other social actors – can contribute to a more sustainable and inclusive global economy. This international program offers to the member companies the opportunity to share information, know-how and experiences.
A long-lasting position for L’Oréal
L’Oréal’s commitment to the Global Compact is in line with the Group’s long tradition of social and environmental initiatives. Mr. Owen-Jones noted recently that “We remain loyal to the principles of Management given by Eugène Schueller, founder of L’Oréal, and are truly convinced that our long-term growth has to go beyond an economic model. That is why we always seek to link our economic performance with strong ethical principles as well as a deep belief in our responsibilities regarding all the ones concerned directly by the company, its environment, and the community in a whole.”
This engagement was formalized in a Code of Business Ethics which summarized the principles the Group stands by which are respect for individuals, law, environment; the partnerships with suppliers, clients and distributors; and the sincerity and openness in the information provided on its business operations.
The Group continues to implement its sustainable development approach beyond its strong ethical principles, by giving excellent working conditions for all its employees and launching concrete initiatives aimed at protecting the environment and serving the community at large.
L’Oréal is included in the sustainable development indexes – Aspizone, FTSE 4 Good, DJSI Stoxx - for listed companies in Europe and aims to keep progressing by developing more and more hands-on initiatives worldwide.
