L’Oréal has 14 research centres and 13 evaluation centres accross the world of which one in Chicago, is specifically dedicated to the study of the skin and hair of people of African descent and another, recently inaugurated in Pudong in China in 2005, dedicated to the analysis of the distinctive characteristics of Asian skin and hair.

Our approach to ethnicity also draws on research conducted in the field by 14 research centers and 13 evaluation centers around the world to identify the impact of climate, environment and culture on beauty practices.

This global approach, which we call “geocosmetics”, reflects our concern for human diversity. It enables us to achieve a perfect match between products and needs, in some cases contributing to the emergence of new trends.

All aspects of skin pigmentation must be carefully mapped in a colour chart for the development of quality make-up and personal care products.

In Brazil, observation of local practices led us to develop the first transparent gel mascara to simply curl already long and dark eyelashes.
