Women scientists harness the Web !
Women scientists harness the Web !In 2010, the “For Women in Science” Laureates and Fellowship winners are investing massively in the web. The Internet is the ideal space for sharing information on themes that are of great importance to them: the place and role of women in science.
The Agora blog, window of the programme which has existed for several years, has just undergone a facelift, with new graphics and sections. Over 200 posts signed by 104 women bloggers demonstrate the dynamic energy of this community. Constantly updated, the rich online content consists of videos, photos, news articles and research, making it possible to follow the lives of the Laureates and Fellows on a daily basis, to learn about their careers, commitments and thoughts on the major topics at the heart of scientific debate. The blog is designed not only for the 1000 women scientists who have been honoured with Awards or Fellowships since 1998, but also for the members of the jury, the scientific community, journalists, graduate students, and anyone who believes women play a fundamental role in the sciences.
Agora’s new look only strengthens its already highly visible online profile. A page devoted to the For Women in Science program was launched on Facebook last September and has already attracted more than 2500 fans. Just a month after its opening, the site had already become the most important “women and science” community on Facebook, the world’s second most visited website! Many Fellowship winners play a very active role, commenting on the latest news concerning the programme, especially the big news that two previous For Women in Science Laureates were awarded Nobel Prizes. The hottest topics are sent out directly via the micro-blogging site Twitter, which has already signed on 500 followers.
The latest “must” is the new “For Women and Science” channel on YouTube. The channel’s playlist contains all the video portraits of the Laureates and Fellowship winners since the Programme began, as well as films of the awards ceremonies and videos by our partner, UNESCO.
From Facebook to Twitter and YouTube, the “For Women in Science” programme has conquered the web!
