Operation Sourire in Mali, February 2010

Point G Hospital, Gabriel Touré Hospital, Kati Hospital and Kati Military Hospital.
Operation Sourire in Mali largely cares for patients in the field of traumatology and orthopaedics, treating malformations caused by disease and injury.

Team members work closely with local medical staff, who are highly involved in the programme and carry out an increasing number of surgical operations, along with patient selection and follow-up. Each patient is referred to the programme by a Malian surgeon, who has seen the patient at their surgery, operates on or is involved in operating on the patient and provides post-operative follow-up.

A nurse from the surgical unit works alongside local ward staff to provide advice on ward hygiene, cleanliness, decontamination and sterilisation.

The Operation Sourire team also offers medical students supervised consultations and visits. Interns are highly motivated and quick to learn, keen to pick up and use new techniques and measures covering hygiene and asepsis.

During this mission, 23 patients underwent surgery.
