The For Women in Science Program
The For Women in Science Program

We are convinced that science and women bring hope and foster discovery, innovation and excellence. All the best talents must be called upon to accomplish this mission. L’Oréal believes in women, L’Oréal believes in science.
Jean-Paul Agon, Chairman and CEO of L’Oréal and Chairman of L’Oréal Foundation.

In partnership with UNESCO, the For Women in Science program provides support for women researchers on all continents and at different points in their careers. This may come in the early stages of a young researcher’s vocation or be in celebration of a full career committed to scientific advancement.

Presenting exceptional scientists to a wider public

A major aim of the program is to identify and support eminent women in science throughout the world who are working in both life or physical sciences. Every year, five L’Oréal-UNESCO Awards are presented to exceptional women.By giving these researchers increased visibility, the awards show the way for new generations, encouraging young women to follow their example. Since the launch of the program, 82 women have been distinguished by the L’Oréal-UNESCO Awards, two of whom subsequently received the Nobel Prize.

Helping young researchers

The second aim of the L'Oréal-UNESCO For Women in Science program is to support talented young female researchers throughout their career, and particularly at crucial juncture in their path when difficulties can get the better of their dedication to science. Each year, L’Oréal subsidiaries around the world provide 236 fellowships to young women researchers around the world. In 2015, the program has established the International Rising Talent Grants awarded annually to 15 PhD students and post-doctoral Fellows. Chosen from among the winners of the 236 local fellowships, they are given an additional reward and international visibility.

Adapting support to local realities

Since the beginning of the program, over 2170 young researchers were encouraged in more than 110 countries. In almost 50 programs, research fellowship are adapting to local realities to allow young women scientists to go on with their careers in their own countries. Since 2010, regional programs (Maghreb, Middle-East, Levant & Egypt, Sub-Saharan Africa) were settled to support female researchers in regions of the world where L’Oréal has no presence.

A network of dedicated scientists

Since the beginning of the L’Oréal-UNESCO For Women in Science program, over 2250 talented women scientists were recognized in over 110 countries.
