120 Years of Innovation — Garnier, a Pioneer in Beauty Breakthroughs
In 1904, Alfred Amour Garnier founded Laboratoires Garnier with a radical proposition for its time: nature that cares, improved by science. The first product was a plant-based hair lotion that cared for hair from the inside out, when most beauty products of that era were chemical-heavy and harmful.
Garnier’s new vision of beauty was embodied by one of our first brand ambassadors, Josephine Baker, an icon known for being herself and celebrating her natural beauty.
Garnier’s Environmental and Social Performance
Since 2019, Garnier has published audited data on its performance on various sustainability key performance indicators, including the percentage of recycled materials, and of raw materials coming from bio-based sources and the brand’s CO2 reduction efforts to name few. The brand’s most recent Sustainability Report can be accessed here.
Helping consumers make more informed decisions is also a key priority for Garnier. Garnier has rolled out the EcoBeautyScore4 on all its face care products and rinse off haircare products in Europe. Products are scored from a scale of “A” to “E” based on their environmental footprint, where A represents the lowest environmental impact and E the highest, relative to comparable products in the same category.
4The EcoBeautyScore is a common environmental footprint assessment methodology that measures impact across 16 key indicators, including carbon emissions, water use and resource consumption, in line with the European Union’s Product Environmental Footprint (PEF) principles.
