PFAS: From Industrial Standard to Environmental Evolution

PFAS are a group of over 10,000 synthetic chemicals, long used across industries for their extreme durability and resistance to water and heat. Since the 1950s, they have been used across many industries for their unique ability to resist water, oil, and heat. In the beauty industry, they were valued for creating long-wear makeup and skincare with a smooth, silky texture.

As environmental and scientific data advances, the industry is moving away from these substances. By identifying and testing new alternatives, we aim to provide the same functional and sensorial experiences without relying on traditional PFAS uses.

L’Oréal’s position

L’Oréal’s commitment to safety is a top priority for us. As the leader in Beauty, L’Oréal is particularly attentive to global safety regulations.

Since 2018, in alignment with its global sustainability ambitions, L’Oréal has been phasing out all PFASs from its formulas. Since the end of 2025, we have stopped the production of any formulas containing ingredients of the PFASs family.

The shift to Bio-Based Alternatives 


Finding alternatives to PFASs meant our scientists had to fundamentally re-engineer how our products performed. By harnessing the power of bio-sourced alternatives, we have successfully maintained the high standards of quality and sensorial experience our consumers expect: 

  • Rethinking Colour: Eco-designed mineral and botanical treatments now deliver vibrant colour intensity and long-wear stability — without compromise. 
  • Film-Forming Technology: The signature "second-skin" feel and effortless application are now achieved through more sustainable, high-performance polymers. 
  • Natural Resistance: Water and humidity resistance are delivered by bio-based ingredients that naturally mimic water-repellency — ensuring lasting durability whilst respecting the environment.
