Safety is at the heart of our mission. 

Our scientists think of it as "invisible performance", a fundamental commitment to health and well-being that goes far beyond global regulations.  

It is the silent promise behind every product we create.

  • An in-depth understanding of every ingredient: From the very first day when our products are conceived, we scrutinize every raw material to understand its origin, quality, and how it interacts with the skin. Before any formula is approved, it is reviewed and challenged by our team of 80 expert toxicologists.  Each year, we conduct over 44,000 human safety evaluations, creating a unique "safety ID card" for every single component across our 40 brands.
  • Assessing real-life use: Beauty is personal, and so is health.  Across our 13 evaluation centers, we study how products are used in real life, from the frequency of using a shampoo to the specific needs of sensitive skin or the delicate nature of products for children. We ensure that our standards match the diverse realities of our consumers' lives
  • Pioneering product tolerance: For over 40 years, we have led the world in non-animal testing methods. Since 1989, we have pioneered the use of proprietary reconstructed human skin models.  By combining these advanced models with clinical studies on volunteers and our extensive safety database, we are able to validate the tolerance of our products through rigorous scientific analysis
  • A lifelong responsibility: Our commitment doesn't end when a product leaves the shelf; our responsibility is lifelong. Through a monitoring network covering over 100 countries, we work with dermatologists, consumer helplines, and scientific partners to analyze real-world data. This constant vigilance ensures that L’Oréal remains the global benchmark for product integrity, every single day.

  • 1,700 guardians of quality: Our global operations teams are powered by 1,700 quality experts, our "Guardians of Quality." They harmonize L’Oréal Standards across our 37 factories, ensuring that a product crafted in France meets the same level of quality, reliability and performance as one made in China, Brazil, India, or the USA. No matter where you are in the world, the experience remains the same
  • Precision in every ingredient: Excellence begins with our 7,500 qualified raw materials.  Every year, our teams systematically check 150,000 batches of raw materials and every packaging component upon arrival. By maintaining high-standards of precision, we can ensure that every formula can be replicated consistently – ensuring the same results from every batch of product. 
  • The industry of the future:In our global facilities, the future is already here.  Our production lines undergo quality controls at least every 60 minutes. We use collaborative robots, called cobots, together with sophisticated digital tools to individually check every product for formula integrity and shade precision. It is a world where advanced technology ensures human excellence. 
  • Proven results, every time: To ensure long-term efficacy, we perform 8,000 microbiology tests and over 40,000 stability tests on our formulas annually. This ensures our formulas remain fresh and active, from the first drop to the last - even through the rigors of e-commerce shipping. 
  • Driven by the Consumer: Our main focus is always on the people using our products.  Each year, more than 200,000 consumers worldwide participate in over 15,000 clinical and sensory studies. This allows us to objectively measure effectiveness in real-world conditions, ensuring our products truly deliver on their promise.

Step 1 - It all starts by combining deep scientific knowledge with consumer insights: This allows us to invent beauty products that truly understand individual needs, and ensure that every product provides the intended efficacy, sensorial experience, and desired end results. To ensure our products deliver on their promise, each year more than 200,000 consumers participate in over 15,000 clinical and sensory studies. 

Step 2 - Thorough attention to raw materials & ingredient sourcing: We source the world’s finest ingredients through a trusted network of global suppliers, each tested before use to confirm their safety and quality.  Every year we check 150,000 batches of raw materials and every packaging component upon arrival.

Step 3 - Optimized formulas: We bring high-performance actives together with the aim of creating safe, stable, and sensorial formulas. Whether we are developing a foundation to match diverse skin tones, a shampoo to enhance shine, or a cream designed for skin longevity, we always aim for optimal performance. 

Step 4 - State-of-the-art packaging: Our packaging is more than just a bottle or a jar; it’s a protective shield - designed to keep every formula fresh and active, from the first drop to the last.  We manage 73,000 different packaging components - each undergoing an average of 15 quality and safety tests.   

Step 5 – Commitment to highest standards for manufacturing: By combining cutting-edge technology with human expertise, we aim to ensure that every single one of the 7+ billion products we make annually meets the exact same uncompromising standards of excellence.  Our production lines undergo quality controls at least every 60 minutes, with a zero-defect approach.

Step 6 - Specialised safety protocols for all finished products: To offer a reliable and high-performance beauty experience, we ensure the long-lasting performance and stability of every one of our products through specialized safety protocols and global consumer validation.  Each year we conduct over 44,000 human safety evaluations to create a unique ‘safety ID card’ for every single component across our 40 brands.

Step 7 - Best in class distribution: Through 158 fulfillment centers, we bring our products to consumers in over 150 countries around the world.  Through our best-in-class systems, we seek to ensure that no matter where in the world a product is bought, its safety, quality and performance are never compromised.
