During a conference organised by C40 Cities in New York on March 15, 2017, Anne Hidalgo, Mayor of Paris and Chair of C40 Cities, announced L’Oréal’s involvement in Women4Climate, a global initiative which seeks to get female entrepreneurs worldwide involved in the fight against climate change.

L’Oréal is the first private sector player to commit to this mentoring programme (by activating women from its teams to accompany young women in developing local solutions to adapt to climate change), support research on how climate change will impact women, and fund projects to provide solutions.

These actions are a part of the Group’s long-term policy of promoting women and fighting climate change.

Studies by the United Nations Population Fund have shown that women are more vulnerable than men to climate change, particularly in developing countries. Women are particularly at risk from heat waves and flooding, extreme weather events which can be caused by climate change.

“Women play a key role in fighting climate change, because they are particularly aware of these issues,” explains Alexandra Palt, Director of Sustainable Development at L’Oréal. “It is our resonsibility to assist and support them. That is why it is strategic for us to make a commitment alongside these women mayors, to support future generations of women leaders who may play a key role on this issue.”

The Women4Climate initiative aims to support young women who have solutions to offer by providing them with the resources they need to develop and complete their projects, to highlight the crucial role which women play in developing policies to fight climate change, and to support the emergence of a new generation of women leaders worldwide.

C 40 Cities, currently headed by  Anne Hidalgo, Mayor of Paris, brings together the world’s 90 largest cities, which together represent 650 million people and a quarter of the global economy. C 40 Cities, created and led by these cities, aims to prevent climate change and implement programs to limit greenhouse gas emissions and climate-related risks, while also improving health, well-being and economic opportunities for city residents.
