L'Oréal-UNESCO for Women in Science Fellowships – 2020 Climate Edition

For 2020, the For Women in Science Fellowships across Australia and New Zealand will be supporting solely women researchers tackling issues around climate change.

This direction comes as a response to the pressing importance of climate action both globally and locally. Five For Women in Science Fellowships worth $25,000 will be awarded – four for Australia and one for New Zealand. This Fellowship will award outstanding female researchers contributing to issues associated with climate change. Issues may include things such as: warning systems, infrastructure, improving dry-land agriculture, water, energy transition, nature-based solutions, resilience and adaptation, climate finance and carbon pricing.

“It is important for industry to play its part in positive action against climate change. Sustainability commitments are vital to reducing our impact, but I believe we have to go beyond this. The ongoing devastation of the Australian bushfires as a consequence of global warming further urged my team and I to devote the For Women in Science program to climate change for 2020. It is my hope that it will support the fight against the current climate emergency, whilst also continuing to address the underrepresentation of women in science.” Rodrigo Pizarro, Country Manager, L’Oréal Australia & New Zealand.

Women are half of our population and it is important they participate in major decisions. Women’s unequal participation in decision-making processes and labour markets compound inequalities and often prevent women from fully contributing to climate-related planning, policy-making and implementation. The United Nation’s figures indicate that women commonly face higher risks and greater burdens from the impacts of climate change and the Paris Agreement has made specific provision for the empowerment of women, recognising that they are disproportionately impacted.

About For Women in Science

In 1998 L'Oréal and UNESCO founded the For Women in Science program to promote and highlight the critical importance of ensuring greater participation of women in science. Each year, the program recognises the achievements of exceptional early-career female scientists and awards them with Fellowships to help further their research.

The Australia and New Zealand L'Oréal-UNESCO For Women in Science Fellowships were launched in 2007 and have recognised 49 outstanding local scientists.
