Preserving Natural Resources

At L’Oréal, we manage our consumption of natural resources to ensure that our activities are compatible with a resource-constrained planet. We promote the use of renewable raw materials that are sustainably sourced or derived from green chemistry. We are also working on solutions that allow for more recycling and promote the development of the circular economy.

Our targets

By 2030, 95% of our ingredients in formula will be bio-based, derived from abundant minerals or from circular processes.

By 2030, 100% of the plastics used in our packaging will be either from recycled or bio-based sources (we will achieve 50% by 2025).

By 2030, we will reduce by 20% in intensity the quantity of packaging used in our products, compared to 2019.

of the plastic used in our packaging comes either from recycled or biobased sources. In 2022, 94,230 tonnes of recycled materials, including 58,142 tonnes in primary and secondary packaging, saved the equivalent amount of virgin materials. 76% of PET plastic is of recycled origin.

For more sustainable packaging

Since 2007, L’Oréal has implemented a responsible packaging policy based on three pillars, known as the “three Rs”: Respect, Reduce and Replace. The Group uses a global, systematic eco-design process, ahead of product design, for the packaging of finished products and also for packaging used during transport. L’Oréal extended this process to include point-of- sale (POS) advertising materials in 2015. It systematically analyses the environmental profile of its packaging in order to identify opportunities for improvement.

Focus On Sustainable Packaging: What Have We Been Up To?

Since 2007, L’Oréal has implemented a responsible packaging policy based on three pillars, known a the “three Rs”: Respect, Reduce and Replace. Here’s an overview of how we’ve improved our packaging.

Acknowledging the increasing pressure on natural resources and the urgent need to scale-up circular economy solutions, L’Oréal has announced the launch of the Circular Innovation Fund, managed by Demeter and Cycle Capital. It will support start-ups and companies across North America, Europe and Asia, which are developing circular use of resources across various sectors, including new materials from the bioeconomy, circular solutions for packaging, recycling & waste, logistics, eco-efficient processes.
