Everyone knows quinoa, but less so the quinoa ‘‘husk’’, the shell that protects the seed. This had not been used up until now. However, L’Oréal researchers have recently shown that the saponins and polyphenols contained in the quinoa husk boast exfoliating properties. Chimex, the Group’s subsidiary specialised in the design and development of eco-responsible processes, has designed and developed an extraction process derived from green chemistry.
From 2015 to 2018 , L’Oréal developed, in Bolivia, a sustainable sourcing project for the quinoa husk, working with its local partners to train growers in low-carbon farming practices.
Renewable, biodegradable, sustainably sourced and derived from green chemistry, quinoa husk is a shining example of L’Oréal’s sustainable innovation programme.
Kiehl’s uses quinoa husk extract in its Night Refining Micro-Peel Concentrate and explains its properties in a nice video.
