Quinoa: biodiversity, a source of innovation

In 2015, L’Oréal developed, in Bolivia, a sustainable sourcing project for the quinoa husk, thus creating a new market for growers.

Everyone knows quinoa, but less so the quinoa ‘‘husk’’, the shell that protects the seed. This had not been used up until now. However, L’Oréal researchers have recently shown that the saponins and polyphenols contained in the quinoa husk boast exfoliating properties. Chimex, the Group’s subsidiary specialised in the design and development of eco-responsible processes, has designed and developed an extraction process derived from green chemistry.

In 2015, L’Oréal developed, in Bolivia, a sustainable sourcing project for the quinoa husk, thus creating a new market for growers and providing benefits for 250 families. L’Oréal works with its local partners to train growers in low-carbon farming practices.

Renewable, biodegradable, sustainably sourced and derived from green chemistry, quinoa husk is a shining example of L’Oréal’s sustainable innovation programme.
